Lights Night
In December 7, we gathered with friends and family to celebrated Lights Night. "La Noche de las Velitas". It's a tradition from Colombia and is usually celebrated when families put paper lanterns outside their houses the second week of December. This tradition started with the celebration of Day of Mary "Inmaculada Concepción". It's a beautiful night that we wanted to celebrate with friends. Our guests brought their own traditions also and we shared with our children the different ways in which people celebrate the holidays. From Peru: We drank hot chocolate (special one with ginger) and panettone, our Jewish friends brought the Menorah and lighted their candle lead by the kids! Our friend from Switzerland carved a beautiful turnip into a lantern to share her tradition! Many traditions on how our families gather and tried to celebrate together. We also made paper lanterns and we had an awesome time!
En Diciembre 7, nos reunimos con nuestros amigos y familiares para celebrar la "Noche de las Velitas". Es una tradicion que es de Colombia y en la que las familias celebran poniendo lamparas de papel afuera de sus casas la segunda semana de diciembre. Esta tradición empezó con la el Día de María "Inmaculada Concepción". Es una hermosa noche que queríamos celebrar con amigos. Así que nuestros invitados trajeron sus tradiciones tambien y compartimos con nuestros niños las maneras diferentes en las que celebramos en diciembre. Desde el Perú: tomamos chocolate caliente (con gengibre) y Panettone, nuestros amigos Judíos trajeron su Menorah e iluminaron la respectiva vela siendo dirigidos por los niños que sabian la canción! Compartimos como nuestras familias celebraban por esta época. Nuestra amiga de Suiza tallo un tubérculo en una linterna! Tambien hicimos linternas de papel y pasamos un tiempo magnífico!

In the past, where we live, In Florida, is been really hard to find traditional paper lanterns that are used for this celebration. For the past three years we had been making our own "farolitos" with the children with paper that we have around the house to recycled it. I will like to give you a little tutorial on how we make our paper lanterns:

En el pasado, donde vivimos, en la Florida, es díficil encontrar los farolitos tradicionales para usarlos en nuestra celebración. Los tres años pasados hemos estado haciendo nuestros propios farolitos con los niños invitados a nuestra casa con papel reciclado que tenemos en la casa. Me gustaría compartir este pequeño tutorial en como hacemos nuestras linternas de papel:
PAPER LANTERNS FROM RECYCLED PAPER= FAROLITOS HECHOS CON PAPEL RECICLADO
MATERIALS=MATERIALES:
-Construction paper for the base.
- White glue or stick glue. (whatever works for you)
- Scissors
- Any paper you have at your house that is not too thick. We use old gift paper and our bubble paint art work paper.
- Glitter, stickers, etc if you want for decoration. You can also encourage the children to paint their own with markers. You can decorate with anything you want!
- Votive battery candles. You can find them everywhere now.
- Papel grueso o cartulina para la base.
- Pegante liquido o en barra. Cualquiera que te funcione.
- Cualquier papel que tengas en tu casa que no sea muy grueso. Usamos papel de regalo viejo y nuestras obras de arte de nuestra sesión de pintura.
- Escarcha, stickers, etc lo que tu desees para decorarlos. También puedes decirle a los niños para pintarlos con marcadores. Puedes hacerles la decoración que desees!
- Velitas pequeñas de baterias. Puedes encontrarlas en cualquier tienda estos días. Estas son más seguras!!
1. We are going to make circular paper lanterns. Start by tracing two circles, one inside the other, in the paper you are going to use for the base. I use two bowls for this. This will be the size for the base of your lantern.
1. Vamos a hacer farolitos redondos. Empieza por trazar dos circulos, uno dentro del otro, en el papel que usaras para tu base. Yo use dos tazas. Este sera el tamaño de tu farol.
2. Cut little slits in the paper from the border of the paper to the border of the inside circle. Then fold. Children enjoy doing this part!
2. Cortar pequeños cortes desde el borde del papel hacia el círculo de adentro. Después dobla. A los niños les gusta hacer esta parte.
3. Cut a rectangle of the paper that you want for the body of your paper lantern. The size has to be according to the size of the circle of the base. You don't have to measure exactly because at the time of glueing it, you can cut the excess. Then you can cut the upper body of that paper border if you want. One long side will be glue to the base and the other one will be the upper part of the lantern. Also, add glitter or color, etc. If you are going to use wrapping paper you can make little "windows" in the paper !!
3. Corta un rectangulo del papel que tu desees para el cuerpo
del farolito. El tamaño tiene que ser de acuerdo a el tamaño de la base que escogiste. No tienes que medirlo perfectamente, ya que a la hora de pegar, puedes recortar el exceso. Puedes tambien hacerle un borde a tu papel. Uno de los lados largos sera pegado a la base, el otro sera la parte de arriba de tu farol.
También puedes pegarle la escharcha o pintarlo. Si usas el papel de regalo, puedes cortarle ventanitas!
4. Now to glue!!! This is the hardest part. I like to put the glue on the paper first on a table and then start attaching the folded border you have to your base. Children usually need help at this part. Then you go around and cut the excess paper leaving it a little longer to glue the end over the other end of the side of the paper.
4. Ahora a pegar!! Esta es la parte más díficil. A mi me gusta poner el pegante sobre el lado del papel que voy a pegar sobre una mesa y empezar a pegar las pestañitas del papel de la base. Usualmente los niños necesitan ayuda para hacer esta parte. Después los pegas hasta el final y cortas el exceso de papel dejandolo un poquito mas largo para pegarlo sobre el otro lado del papel.
5. The paper lantern is ready!! You just need to turn on the candle and put it inside!!
5. Tu farolito esta listo!! Solo debes ponerle la velita!!!
FUN FACTS ABOUT COLOMBIA
Colombia is a country in the Northest part of South America, touching both Oceans the Pacific and The Atlantic. The majority language is Spanish. It has a long tradition of soccer and other sports like cycling. Colombia is a beautiful country that has a rich history that is reflected in all its territory. Main exports are coffee, emeralds and flowers! One of the most beautiful things about Colombia is its people. They are very open and relaxed. I will like to point out some things that are typical in Colombia:
1. Eating arepas: Corn meal creations that can be shaped in different sizes and top or fill with different ingredients, especially cheese. I may need to make a post only on arepas!
2. Tejo: Is an ancestral sport from the Central part of the country that has a shaped iron disc that you need to aim to a fireworks frame to score.
3.Empanadas: Colombia empanadas are fryed and filled with pork and potatoes.
4. Ciclovias: Certain days in which highways close for cars and citizens use their bikes or skates to go many places around the city, mainly in the capital city, Bogota.
5.La Chiva: Coloful artesanal buses that have a party wherever they go.
6. La ruana: Beautiful creations made of wool that are great for cold weather.
Colombia se encuentra en la parte norte de Suramérica, rodeado de los Océanos Pacífico y Atlåntico. El idioma de la mayoría es el Español. Tiene una gran tradición con el fútbol y el ciclismo. Colombia es un hermoso país que tiene una larga historia que se ve reflejada en todo su territorio. Sus productos de exportación son el café, las esmeraldas y las flores! La cosa mas bella de Colombia son sus personas. Estas son muy abiertas y descomplicadas. Me gustaría nombrar algunas cosas que son típicas de Colombia:
1. Comer arepas: Son hechas de harina de maíz y pueden ser hechas de diferentes tamaños o formas, con diferentes ingredientes por encima o por dentro, especialmente el queso. Estoy pensando en escribir un post solo en arepas!
2. Tejo: Es un deporte ancestral de la parte central del país, que tiene un disco metálico que se debe tirar a un punto rodeado de pólvora para ganar puntos.
3. Empanadas: Las empanadas Colombianas son fritas y por lo general rellenas de puerco y papa.
4. Ciclovias: Algunos días en los que se cierran las avenidas a los carros y las personas usan sus bicicletas y patines para pasear por la ciudad, generalmente en la ciudad capital de Bogotá.
5. La Chiva: Buses artesanales que siempre son una fiesta andante.
6. La ruana: Hermosas creaciones de lana virgen que son magníficas en el clima frío.
