Have you ever imagine the life of the sailors in the 1400's ? Do you ever try to go into a boat that doesn't have a motor? Last month, we were fortunate to visit the real replicas of Christopher Colombus ships in Jupiter Florida. My children were very interested in the history of these boats. It was an excellent opportunity to learn geography, history and naval terminology.
Hands-on learning is the best way to learn, and we were surprised to find out how small these boats were. These ships were made in Brazil, because the wood needed, originated from there.
These boats are called Carabelas because of the way they are constructed and sail. Indeed is like going back in history and is really hard to imagine all the hardships of the people that live at sea at that time. The trip of Christopher Colombus was a really hard trip, commissionated by the Kingdom of Spain. The flags of Spain made it to the Island of "Haití" in 1420, that was the aboriginal name of the whole island before the Spanish arrived and then called it "La Española".
We learned that when you are in a boat, you don't use the terms left or right, instead is "port" and "starboard". We also learned that all the sailors slept on the deck!! The bottom part of the ship was used to store food, animals and only the captain had the key to that. Any crossing to the captain's pit was a clear sign of mutiny!! The children were curious where the bathroom was located, but of course, there wasn't a bathroom aboard, they will usually go overboard and check for the wind!!!!!

Puedes imaginarte como era la vida de los marineros en los 1400s? Alguna vez has tratado de navegar un barco que no tiene motor? El mes pasado tuvimos la fortuna de visitar las replica de los barcos de Cristobal Colón que estaban en Jupiter, Florida. Mis hijos estaban muy interesados en la historia de estos botes. Fué una oportunidad excelente para aprender sobre geografía, historia y términos navales.
La mejor manera de aprender es haciendo, y nos sorprendió lo pequeños que eran estos botes. Estos botes fueron hechos en Brasil, ya que la madera con la que se hicieron es de allí.
Esta clase de botes son llamados Carabelas por la manera en la que fueron construídos y navegados. En realidad fué como ir de vuelta al pasado y es bien díficil imaginar todas las privaciones que los marineros sufrían. El viaje de Cristobal Colón fué bien díficil, comisionado por el reino Español. Las banderas Españolas llegaron a la isla de "Haití"en 1420, ya que ese era el nombre utilizado por las personas originarias de ese lugar a toda la isla, y después de que los Españoles llegaron, la llamaron "La Española".
Aprendimos que cuando estas en un barco, no usas los términos izquierda o derecha, se deben usar "babor" y "estribor". También nos enteramos de que toda la tripulación dormia en la cubierta del barco!! La parte de abajo se usaba para guardar la comida y los animales y solo el capitán tenía la llave. Cualquier cruce a la parte del mando del capitán era considerado un motín!! Los niños estaban curiosos de saber donde quedaba el baño, pero por supuesto, el baño era usualmente hacer su necesidad y tirarlo por la borda, y fijarse del viento!!!
