When people ask me which one is my favorite holiday, I really have so many beautiful memories of Christmas but Day of the Dead is my absolute favorite one. I never enjoyed the grotesque nature of the Halloween season. When I moved to the United States, I was very scared of the gory in which is celebrated Halloween, including horror movies that indeed I don't find appealing. I don't enjoy torture or innuendos of people killing for fun. I find it interesting and enjoy dressing up. I think you can find many reasons to do so any other time of the year, in fact, I encourage it!!! But doing things that are not meaningful to me, are really not in my book. I want to teach my children that everything we do can create a powerful energy and teach something. For my family, celebrating The Day of the Dead is to be purposeful. We have the opportunity to work on family projects, create our family altar or offering, dressing up for the parades, apply makeup, crafts and food for the occasion and everything has a meaning behind it!! The creation of my family altar is a prayerful and conscious exercise to remember loved ones and to bring to life their existence.  Celebrating in a community is crucial to creating a sense of belonging and a family culture that fosters common values, so putting together the event, and participating in the parade brings values to my children, responsibility, artistry, cultural awareness. The amount of time we devote to our food, crafts, and makeup brings the importance of our traditions to our year. It is being intentional. All these traditions that are near to our ancestry. I love explaining to my children about different artists and different types of music that are related to this day!! It feels so meaningful and also so full of respect. Celebrating Day of the Dead for me is an educative process every year, to my children and others that want to know more about it. This year, we are collaborating to put together a community altar in our city of Lake Worth in honor of all the children that had been separated or are being separated from their parents because of immigration. We want ALL families to be together and stay together!!

Remember your family and loved ones that are not here with a mindful attitude, no matter your belief, they are part of you.
