Where do you live?
I live in midcoast Maine, moving here in 1995 from Albany, NY, where I was born, a few years after I graduated from college.
How do you describe yourself ?
I am an artist at heart, with a passion for foreign languages! I was all set to go to art school after high school, with portfolio ready and applications in hand when I happened to take a literature class during which I read Dostoyevsky's 'Crime and Punishment' for the first time and fell in love with Russian culture. I ended up majoring in Russian Language & Literature, spending a semester abroad in Moscow before returning to the states.
What do you do?
My first job entailed teaching ESL to refugees and coaching them on applying for jobs and going on interviews.
Not long after moving to Maine, I began teaching Russian to children and adults, and in 1998 I was hired to develop the elementary Spanish program from scratch at a local school, where I still teach Kindergarten through 4th grade Spanish. About five years ago, I decided to try and bring my artistic interest together with my love of teaching languages and create a set of printable resources for other teachers, along with online support in the form of my blog and Facebook group: el Mundo de Pepita, Resources for Teaching Languages to Children. We now have resources in Spanish, Russian, French, German and ESL :)
Which languages do you talk and sing?
I speak English, Spanish and Russian, and have had opportunities to study Bosnian, Romanian and Japanese, though I am a novice speaker in those last three to say the least!
In which ways are you willing to help community and families (locally and worldwide)?
Over the years I have frequently served in the capacity of consultant to families and districts who are looking to develop elementary language programs of their own, helping them in the planning and implementation stages as it can be a very daunting enterprise. I have also been an interpreter and translator for families and individuals in all kinds of situations, and I regularly connect with families in my district who might need reassurance and have questions about raising their children with an heritage language. I was the Maine Representative of NNELL (National Network for Early Language Learning), serving as a strong advocate for early language instruction, served as the Chair of the Board of a local non profit language school for five years, and am the current FLES Representative for FLAME (Foreign Language Association of Maine). As well, my husband and I are great supporters of our local shelter, and use part of our proceeds from el Mundo de Pepita to support the ASPCA on a monthly basis as well as the World Wildlife Fund.

Dónde vives?
Vivo en medio de la costa de Maine, US, a donde me mudé en 1995 de Albany, NY, donde nací, algunos años despues de que me gradué.
Cómo te describes?
Soy una artista de corazón, con una pasión por los idiomas! Estaba resuelta de ir a la escuela de arte despues del bachillerato, con mi portafolio listo y aplicaciones cuando en una clase de literatura me leí "Crimen y Castigo" de Dostoyesvsky y me enamoré de la cultura Rusa. Terminé haciendo un estudio en Literatura Rusa e Idioma, pasando un semestre en Moscu antes de regresar a USA.
Qué haces?
Mi primer trabajo fué enseñar Inglés como segunda lengua a los refugiados y ayudarlos a aplicar por trabajos e ir a sus entrevistas. No mucho tiempo despues, me mudé a Maine, y empecé a enseñar Ruso a niños y a adultos, en 1998 fuí contratada para desarrollar un programa de Español para una escuela local, en donde todavía enseño desde el Kindergarden hasta el cuarto grado. Hace cinco años, decidí usar mi talento artístico para enseñar idiomas y crear recursos imprimibles para otros maestros, junto con mi grupo de apoyo en linea de mi blog y Facebook group: El Mundo de Pepita, Resources for Teaching Languages to Children. Ahora tenemos recuersos en Español, Ruso, Francés, Alemán e Inglés.
Qué idiomas hablas y cantas?
Hablo Inglés, Español y Ruso, he tenido oportunidades de estudiar Bosnio, Rumano y Japonés, pero no soy fluida en estos ultimos!
En que maneras estas dispuesta a ayudar a tu comunidad y familias (localmente y mundialmente)?
A traves de los años frecuentemente he servido como ayuda a familias y distritos que estan buscando maneras para implementar programas de idiomas, ayudandoles a planear en distintas maneras y su implementación que aveces puede ser mucho trabajo. También he servido de interprete y traductora para familias y personas en mi distrito que tienen preguntas sobre como criar a sus hijos en el idioma de su hogar. También serví como la representante de NNELL (National Network for Early Language Learning) en Maine, abogacia de la instrucción temprana de idiomas, representante de una escuela local sin animo de lucro por cinco años y actualmente soy la representante de FLES para FLAME (Foreign Language Association of Maine) Igualmente, con mi esposo somos ayudantes en nuestro refugio de animales local y parte de los ingresos recibidos por medio de el Mundo de Pepita lo usamos para ayudar el ASPCA y el Fondo Mundial de Vida Salvaje.
