The story of Lempira
In Honduras, every July 20, there is the celebration of "El Indio Lempira" in remembrance of this amazing indigenous heroe. Did you know that the currency in Honduras is called Lempira in honor of him?
The Historical Lempira
He was a chief of the Lenca people. Lenca people still exist in the Southwestern part of Central America, (Honduras and El Salvador.) It is believed that his real name was Erandique, but he was recognized in the original language of his people as Lempira, that, in Lenca language, 'Lempa' means Lord and 'era' means mountain. So his name means Lord of the Mountain.
His existence was documented by the Spanish Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, but also passed by oral history by many generations.
He was one of the many originary persons of this continent that fought against the Spaniards to keep their culture and traditions alive, to have their people free and to keep their territories. Sadly, in 1530, he was killed in battle and one of the most recent texts found says he was beheaded by one of the colonizers.
Still, in many schools around Honduras, the story that is taught is that he was ambushed and killed while seeking a peace treaty with the Spanish forces.
How is celebrated?
Many schools make a reenactment of the last battle of the Lempira chief, (Indio Lempira) and also have an elaborated contest of crafted traditional costumes, that usually the students and the parents design together, made with different types of seeds, like beans and pumpkin seeds and also corn leaves. This pageant is called "India Bonita" and is celebrated either on the day of Indio Lempira or by September 15, Independence Day of Honduras.

El Lempira Histórico
El era un jefe de el pueblo Lenca. El pueblo Lenca todavía existe en la parte sur oeste de Centroamérica, (Honduras y el Salvador) Se cree que su nombre original era Erandique, pero fué reconocido en el idioma Lenca, como, 'Lempa' Señor y 'era' de la sierra. Asi que su nombre significa Señor de la Sierra.
Su existencia fue documentada por el español Antonio Herrera y Tordesillas, pero también fue pasada oralmente por muchas generaciones.
El fué una de las muchas personas originarias a este continente, que pelearon en contra de los Españoles para preservar su cultura y tradiciones vivas, para que sus pueblos fueran libres y para preservas sus territorios. Lastimosamente, en 1530, fue asesinado en batalla, en recientes textos encontrados probablemente decapitado por uno de los colonizadores.
Aun asi, en muchas escuelas alrededor de Honduras, la historia que es enseñada es que el fué engañado y asesinado mientras buscaba hacer un tratado de paz con las fuerzas Españolas.
Como es celebrado?
Muchas escuelas realizan una dramatización de la última batalla de el jefe Lempira y tambien celebran un concurso con atuendos realizados a mano, generalmente hechos por los estudiantes y sus padres, utilizando diferentes tipos de materiales naturales como semillas de frijol, calabaza y hojas de maíz. Este concurso es llamado, "India Bonita" y se celebra el día de el Indio Lempira o en Septiembre 15, el Día de la Independencia de Honduras.
