I met the wonderful herbalist and teacher Sobande Greer at the Florida Herbal Conference of this year and was blown away with her deep knowledge and story telling.
The fact that she is a devotee and granddaughter of a healer from the South of the United States, her practice of Afrobotanism (medicinal plants of healing in the African tradition), her teachings of Ozain African Herbalism class (treatment for holistic healing based on the Yoruba tradition) was a very important moment in my life. The most striking aspect of her personality is the deep respect she has for her African roots and family, the ancient rituals and knowledge, spiritual traditions that for many right now are becoming more and more a pivotal point in their personal lives.
For me, as a mestiza woman, uprooted by immigration, it has been a very long and arduous process to try to understand the knowledge that my ancestors left for me. Many times, the journeys are already chosen for us, but we can face them with courage and power. And that is exactly where I meet all the stories shared by this powerful woman about her African ancestry, the African diaspora, that is very alive and powerful throughout this continent. Sobande is the real deal, I call her a spiritual mama, spiritual gangster, force that teaches and leads by example.
The moment she invited me to Sacred Waters I knew that I wanted to make my best effort to go. The way this retreat is created by and for women of color that need to dive into spaces created just for them, where they can feel free to explore their ancestral knowledge and to form a sisterhood. To give voices and special place to where we can remember all the hardships but also all the knowledge that was left to us by our great grandmothers and powerful women of color of the past to empower us at this moment, to mature, to grow and to face the world.
The conference is held in a beautiful place in Dover, Tennessee, where nature is the temple. It is held in a state park and the accommodations are very simple but comfortable.
Conocí a la maravillosa maestra y herbalista Sobande Greer en la Conferencia de Hierbas de la Florida este año y totalmente me sorprendió con todos su conocimiento y capacidad de contar historias. El hecho de que ella es una devota y la nieta de una sanadora de la tradición del Sur de los Estados Unidos, ella practica el Afrobotanismo (plantas medicinales de la tradición Africana), y su clase de Ozain African Herbalism (Clase de sanación holistica basada en el conocimiento de la tradición Yoruba) ha sido muy importante para mi vida. La cosa que mas me impresionó de su personalidad es su profundo respeto a sus raíces Africanas y a su familia, los rituales milenarios y su conocimiento, tradiciones espirituales que para muchos en este momento son la piedra angular en su crecimiento personal.
Para mi, como una mujer mestiza, que perdió su rumbo por la imigración, ha sido un largo y díficil proceso de entender el conocimiento que mis ancestros han dejado para mi. Muchas veces, nuestros caminos han sido escojidos para nosotros, pero los podemos enfrentar con valentía y poder. Y eso es exactamente donde se encuentran todas las historias compartidas por esta mujer poderosa sobre su tradición Africana, la diaspora Africana, que esta muy viva y es muy poderosa en este continente. Sobande es muy real, la llamo la mamá espiritual, pandillera espiritual, la fuerza que enseña y lidera con su ejemplo.
El momento en el que me invito a Sacred Waters supe que haría mi mejor esfuerzo para poder asistir. Este retiro es creado por y para mujeres de color que necesitan nadar dentro de espacios creados solo para ellas, donde se puedan sentir libres de explorar conocimiento ancestral y formar una hermandad. Al dar voz y un lugar especial en el que podemos recordar todos los obstáculos pero también todo el que conocimiento que nuestras abuelas y mujeres de color poderosas han dejado para nosotras, para empoderarnos en este momento, madurar, crecer y enfrentar el mundo.
Esta conferencia es hecha en un hermoso lugar en Dover, Tennesse en donde la naturaleza es un templo. Es en un parque estatal donde las acomodaciones son simples pero comfortables.
There was a wonderful group of organizers that were on top of all the needs of the group. I am very thankful for their energy. I also appreciated the food, with vegetarian options. Overall, I was very impressed with all the women present, that offered friendship to all, that endure long days as pros, and that accommodated to all the experiences. Many teachers and guides gave us their time and knowledge. Wonderful Mama Yeye, Priestess Louisah Tesh, author of many books and for sure a beacon for many of us. Guide and wonderful mentor Rosita, Professional in Ayurvedic, ancestral knowledge keeper from the Taíno and also Mexican traditions, a wonderful woman was our lead for some of the beautiful and mindful rites we took part in. Gabrielle Tesfaye, visual artist that keeps bringing African diaspora stories to the forefront. Alisa Orduna writer and activist. Lucretia VanDyke, herbalist and pleasure activist. Lidya Koltai, herbalist with Elder Moon Apothecary, that honored us with her knowledge of plants in that bioregion and gave us a plant walk. Asha Middleton that honor everyone with her knowledge and care on herbs for vaginal health and care.
The sisterhood that we can experience in the presence of women that are not afraid of being themselves and also love freely, the open mind and heart to be full of the blessings we can receive, the nature and magic that melanated women are blessed with, make this retreat a must for all the women of color that are looking forward in their inner journeys and to connect with others in the same path. I was very blessed, I hope I can come back and I also hope that I was able to blessed all the friends that I met there!!
Tenían un grupo maravilloso de organizadoras que siempre estaban pendientes de las necesidades del grupo. Estoy muy agradecida de toda su energía. También me gusto la comida, con opción vegetariana. Sobretodos, estuve muy impresionada de todas las mujeres presentes, que ofrecieron amistad a todas, fueron capaces de aguantar largos días como profesionales y que se acomodaron a todas las experiencias. La hermandad que se experimenta en la presencia de mujeres que no tienen miedo de ser ellas mismas, y aman libremente, que tienen una mente abierta y un corazón lleno de todas las bendiciones que se pueden recibir, naturaleza y magia que las mujeres de melanina son llenas, hacen de este retiro un lugar que debe ser visitado para todas aquellas mujeres de color que estan buscando sus propios caminos interiores y que quieren conectarse con otras que caminan los mismos senderos. Fuí muy bendecida y espero poder volver a asistir y que mi presencia haya sido de beneficio para todas las amigas que conocí allí!!
