We joined our school friends for a wonderful visit to Loggerhead Marine Life Center, located in Juno Beach Florida. It is a place where sea turtles are rescued and rehabilitated to later be released in their natural habitat. South Florida has the good fortune to received five different species of sea turtles: Loggerheads, Green Turtles, Hawksbills, Kemp's Ridleys and Leatherbacks! All of them are crucial for the marine ecosystem. Starting at March 1 till October 31, mama turtles find an ancient place at the beach and deposit their eggs. At Loggerhead Marine Life Center, they help the ones that are sick and also save the hatchlings and babies to ensure they can survive!
Nos reunimos con nuestros amigos de escuela para una bella visita a el Centro de Vida Marina Loggerhead, localizado en Juno Beach, Florida. Este es un lugar en el que las tortugas marinas son salvadas, rehabilitadas y después dejadas en libertad en su entorno natural. El sur de la Florida tiene la gran fortuna de recibir a cinco differentes especies de tortugas marinas: La Tortuga Cabezona, La Tortuga Verde, Tortuga de Carey, Tortuga Kemp Ridley o Tortuga Iora y la Tortuga Tinglada o Dorso de Cuero! Todas ellas son especies necesarias para el sistema marino. Empezando en Marzo 1 hasta Octubre 31, las mamas tortugas encuentran un lugar ancestral en la playa para depositar sus huevos. En el Centro Marino de Loggerhead, se les ayuda cuando estan enfermas y también para salvar a las jóvenes y a las bebés a sobrevivir!
Daily, many sea turtles get stranded in fisherman nets or get trapped in places. If you go to the beach and dig a hole, please cover it up!! We don't want any of this turtles to get trapped! This one was found dehydrated on a fisherman boat. They were measuring her and the turtle doctors will take care of her.
A diario, muchas tortugas se pierden y terminan en las redes de los pescadores o en lugares de donde no pueden salir. Si vas a la playa y haces un hueco, por favor cúbrelo antes de irte, no queremos que alguna tortuga quede atrapada! Esta fue encontrada con signos de deshidratación en un bote de pesca. Fue medida y los doctores cuidarán de ella.
After finding small turtles and being sure they are healthy the staff takes them in a boat to where they can easily find the marine currents, where they can ride safely to their destination! Only females come to the shores to lay their eggs!! Males live their entire lives in the ocean!
Después de encontrar tortugas jóvenes o bebés el equipo se asegura de que esten saludables y las llevan en un bote hasta donde ellas puedan encontrar fácilmente las corrientes marinas, donde pueden seguirlas seguramente hasta su destino! Solo las tortugas hembra regresan a la playa a poner sus huevos!! Los machos viven toda su vida en el óceano!
Sea turtles suffer from many dangers, especially the loss of their natural habitat because of pollution. Many species only feed on marine sponges or sea grass that is affected by contamination. Others feed on Jellyfishes that they confuse with plastic in the ocean. When they eat things that are not good for them, they usually stop eating and their stomachs get damaged. We need to limit our use of plastics that end up in the ocean putting many species in danger.
Las tortugas marinas sufren de muchos peligros, pero la pérdida de su habitat natural a causa de la contaminación es la mas grave. Muchas especies tienen una dieta única de esponjas marinas o pasto marino que se ve afectado por la contaminación. Otras se alimentan de medusas que confunden con plástico en el mar. Cuando comen estas cosas que no son buenas para ellas, por lo general paran de comer y su estómago se perjudica. Necesitamos limitar nuestro uso de plásticos que terminan en el óceano poniendo a muchas especies en peligro.
