Music learning is a lot like language learning. I have noticed that if you just excite your children and encourage them, they will totally want to learn to play instruments and make their own music.
We had been on the road of music for many years and here are my tips for new parents that want to start them with classes.
1. Expose them to music. Start them young. Take any opportunity for them to see musicians and instruments any chance you have. Free concerts in the park or open venues are the best. Bring lots of snacks and toys, and by toys I mean not a tablet and not noisy. I created some rhythm games with them and we made the toys dance along with the music. I also carry them on my lap and we will tap gently with the rhythm of the song. I will often tell them of all the wonderful stories they can imagine when they are listening to different pieces. I exposed my children to many genres, mainly classical and World Musics and will try to give them some context of what is going on and fill them with excitement.
2. Give them a few options for the instruments they can start playing. That will give them some ownership over the decision of taking classes.
3. Realize that you are your child's music teacher at home. Yes, even if you don't play any instruments. It is crucial to help them with practice EVERY DAY and organization. Your communication with their teacher will help your child to do well in their learning.
4. If you play an instrument, just take it easy with your child. I have seen parents that over saturated their children with their knowledge. Yes, it is awesome but can also backfire. And you don't want your child to stop playing.
5. Do your research in which methods of music learning will fit better with your child. We love the Suzuki method since the beginning. I like how the teachers care for the child not only in their music learning but also for their character. There are many certified Suzuki music teachers here
6. Finding a great teacher is the best gift you can give your child. Remember, this person is going to be one of your child's mentors. Their personalities have to click and they have to get along. This has been so true for us even today. A teacher can be a great musician but that doesn't make them a great teacher for your child.

Aprender un instrumento es como aprender un idioma. Me he dado cuenta de que si animamos a nuestros hijos, ellos desearan aprender a tocar instrumentos y a hacer su propia música.
Nosotros hemos estado en el camino de la música ya por mas de cinco años y estos son mis consejos para todos los padres que desean empezar con clases:
1. Expongalos a la música. Empiecen cuando estan pequeños y cojan cuanquier oportunidad que tengan de ver personas tocando instrumentos o los instrumentos. Conciertos gratis en el parque y lugares abiertos son lo mejor. Traigan muchos snacks y juguetes, no digitales o ruidosos. Me inventé juegos con el ritmo y haciamos que nuestros juguetes danzaran con la música. También los ponía en mi regazo y tocaba suavemente con mi mano en su cuerpito con llevando la canción. Frecuentemente, compartía las historias maravillosas que nos podiamos imaginar con diferentes piezas musicales. Yo expusé a mis hijos a muchos generos musicales, principalmente clásico y Músicas Tradicionales y les daba un pequeño contexto de lo que pasaba para llenarlos de entusiasmo.
2. Denles algunas pocas opciones de los instrumentos que ellos pueden aprender a tocar. Eso les dara un sentido de apropiación para cuando decidan empezar sus clases.
3. Dense cuenta de que ustedes son los maestros de música de sus hijos en la casa. Si, aún si ustedes no tocan ningún instrumento. Es muy importante para ayudarles a practicar TODOS LOS DÍAS y su organización. Su comunicación con el profesor o profesora ayudará a su hijo a hacer bien en su aprendizaje.
4. Si ustedes tocan algún instrumento, cojanlo suave con su hijo o hija. He visto muchos padres sobresaturar a sus hijos con conocimiento. Si, puede ser maravilloso pero se puede voltear. Y ustedes no quieren que su hijo pare de tocar.
5. Hagan su propia tarea acerca de los diferentes métodos de aprendizaje musical y escojan el que mejor le ayude a su hijo. A nosotros nos encanta el método Suzuki desde el principio. Nos gusta como los profesores cuidan de todos los aspectos del aprendizaje y el caracter. Pueden encontrar maestros Suzuki aquí
6. Encontrar un buen maestro de música para sus hijos es el mejor regalo que pueden darles. Esta persona sera uno de sus mentores. Sus personalidades debe llevarse. Esto es cierto para nosotros hasta el día de hoy. Un profesor puede ser un buen músico, pero eso no los hace un buen profesor para sus hijos.
