I had always admired those beautiful banners that in every Mexican event you see hanging over, colorful, flying in the wind!! Well they are call the lost art of papel picado!! These banners are not beeing made by hand any more. They are usually bring from China where I guess they have machines that punch the holes. We were able to go to this class in which we were able to make our own!! First, this really requires lots of skill and patience. If you want to design beautiful scenes, that really requires hours of you making each hole!!! First you trace your template, this technique calls for punching the paper and different types of hollow chisels are use, you hammer them over the paper taking care of the pressure other wise it would break. It was very nice to do, hammering and trying to find the way to do the design. My daughter made the Catrina design and was really happy to see it finish. The truth is that my husband help her finish it with an exacto blade!!! Now, we have a beautiful papel picado flag in our living room!!
Siempre he admirado las hermosas banderas de papel que en cada fiesta Mejicana vuelan coloridos en el aire. Estos se llaman papel picado y son un arte que se esta perdiendo. Ya no estan siendo hechos a mano ya que los traen de China en donde me imagino tienen máquinas que hacen los diseños. Fuimos a una clase para aprender como hacerlos. Primero, esto requiere mucha habildad y paciencia. Si quieres hacer un diseño mas intrincado, requiere de horas para hacer cada hoyo!! Primero tienes que trazar el diseño y esta técnica requiere que uses cinceles huecos para papel y los martilles sobre el papel, aplicando la presión adecuada para no dañar el papel. Fue agradable hacerlo, martillar y tratar de encontrar la manera de hacer el diseño. Mi hija hizo una Catrina y estuvo feliz de verla terminada. La verdad es que mi esposo la ayudo con una cuchilla para terminarlo! Ahora, tenemos una hermosa decoración de papel picado en nuestra sala!!
